RECTOR'S BLOG

Toledo Streets Newspaper

Dear Friends,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Trinity will have a new building partner starting next month. Toledo Streets Newspaper (TSN) will occupy the former Next to New space located in the lower level of the church. TSN launched in 2009 as part of 1Matters.org. After five years as a branch of 1Matters, TSN grew to become its own organization. They are part of a global street paper movement of over 110 papers in 35 countries, all with the same goal – giving their communities a program to lift individuals out of poverty through work.

The way their program works is simple: each self-employed vendor starts with 10 free newspapers. Papers are sold with a suggested donation of $1.00. After the first 10 free papers, additional copies are available to vendors at $0.25 each. The vendors keep all profits.

Before this latest development, Trinity already had a solid, positive relationship with TSN. Our volunteers provide a TSN vendor lunch each month, and a generous portion of this year’s Easter offering was designated for support of TSN’s mission.

Trinity is in the process of clearing out the former Next to New space and has been able to donate some of the store fixtures to other area non-profits. However, there’s still much to do. If you’d like to help get the space ready, come on Saturday, May 11, between 10:00 am – 12:00 noon. That day we’ll also be weeding the beds on the Plaza and sprucing up the N. St. Clair side of the church. TSN will use their new space for offices and vendor meetings. They will have their own entrance on N. St. Clair Street. When Trinity delivers lunch each month, the travel distance will be much shorter!

What a blessing it is to be able to welcome an organization that makes such a huge difference in Toledo! And what a terrific thing it will be to have a significant portion of Trinity’s unused space occupied by a group whose mission aligns with the church’s mission! This kind of ongoing partnership is exactly what a progressive, downtown parish should be forming. Welcome, Toledo Streets Newspaper! We look forward to collaborating for a long time to come.

Blessings,

Stephen Applegate

Perhaps you are new here at Trinity. Or maybe you have been coming for a while but still have lots of questions about what this “Episcopal” church is all about. If you’d like a deeper understanding of who we are and why we do what we do, then Episcopal 101 is for you!

Our Interim Rector, Stephen Applegate, will hold Episcopal 101 sessions on three consecutive Sundays in the Walbridge Room on the 1st floor of the Parish House following the 10:00 am service. The class begins this Sunday, May 5. If you plan to attend, please use the link below to sign up.

HELP WANTED FOR SPRING CLEANING AT TRINITY

Workdays scheduled for two Saturdays: May 11 & 18

“Spring is Sprung,” and with the arrival of warmer days, it’s time for spring cleaning. We’ve scheduled two consecutive Saturdays, May 11 & 18, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon to get a couple of important tasks accomplished.

On May 11, crews will help weed the beds in the Plaza, spruce up the N. St. Clair side of the church, and clear out the former Next to New Space as we prepare to welcome Trinity Streets Newspaper, our new building partner.

Then, on May 18, we’ll observe the first “dirt day.” We’ll fill many of the beds on the Plaza with dirt to prepare for planting several Sacred Grounds gardens.

Wear your gardening clothes, bring a pair of gloves and your favorite garden tool (we’ll have some available, too!) and join in the fun. “Many hands make light work” – so goes the old saying. And many helpers make for a community-building project.

We promise refreshments and fun on both days!

BAPTISM ON PENTECOST

The Sacrament of Holy Baptism will be offered on Pentecost

On Pentecost, Sunday, May 19, we’ll offer baptism during the 10:00 am service. Pentecost, when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit, is an especially appropriate time for the administration of this sacrament.

Anyone – regardless of age – is welcome to be baptized, but since Holy Baptism is full initiation into the Body of Christ, the Episcopal Church baptizes persons only once!

Although parents accept the primary responsibility for the spiritual development of their children, godparents for children are highly recommended. Adults being baptized are required to have at least one sponsor.

All persons seeking baptism (or the parents of children being presented for baptism) are required to meet with the priest for at least one session (lasting about an hour and a half) to discuss the meaning of baptism and to learn more about the service. A meeting can be arranged by contacting the parish office – (419) 243-1231 or trinity@trinitytoledo.org.

Since Pentecost is just two weeks away, please let the church know as soon as possible if you are interested.

THE COLLEGE FOR CONGREGATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Launches in August – An Opportunity to Learn & Grow

The Diocese of Ohio is launching its College for Congregational Development (CCD) program in August. The first session – known as Year A – of the two-year training begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 11 and concludes with lunch on Friday, August 16. The College for Congregational Development will take place at Bellwether Farm in Wakeman, Ohio. The cost is $850.00 for a single-occupancy room, all meals and snacks, trainers, curriculum, etc. The Diocese of Ohio has partial scholarships available, as does Trinity through its special funds.

Ideally, Trinity would have a congregational team go to the program together, but it is not required. If a team attends, each member of a team is responsible for their own full participation in all the elements of the College.

If you are interested, please contact Trinity’s Interim Rector, Stephen Applegate, who heartily endorses this program. George Benson, our Director of Community Engagement, is also the co-director of CCD and can provide additional information. Because space is extremely limited, please act quickly if you believe God is calling you to attend.

Actors Collaborative Toledo (ACT) is proud to present the area premiere of Tiny Beautiful Things by Nia Vardalos (adapted from the book by Cheryl Strayed). Tickets can be purchased at www.act419.org. Nancy Wright directs the play and features Marissa Rex in the central role of Sugar. Ryan Albrecht, Leah Creek, and Gloria Wang round out the cast, with all three making their ACT debut.

Tiny Beautiful Things is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions that have no answers.

The play will be performed in our St. Mark's Chapel at 8:00 p.m. on May 17 & 18, 2024, and 3:00 p.m. on May 19, 2024.
