DEAR FRIENDS

Come thirsty this Sunday!

Dear Friends,

We are firmly planted in the dog days of summer and nearly nothing signifies a hot summer day quite like a lemonade stand with eager young sellers situated behind a dressed-up card table in the blaring hot sun. Well, we can spare you the blaring hot sun this Sunday. Our own Melanie Schell will have a lemonade stand during coffee hour to support the fundraising efforts of Isaiah 117 House in Lucas County. As their website states, Isaiah 117 is reshaping the way foster care begins.

When children are removed from their homes out of concern for their safety, they are usually brought to a child welfare services office to await placement. This wait can be a few hours to several days. These children often have nothing with them and are scared, lonely, hungry, and in dirty clothing.

Isaiah 117 provides a comforting home where these children instead can be brought to wait – a place that is safe with friendly and loving volunteers who provide clean clothes, smiles, toys, and snuggly blankets. This space allows children to receive the comfort and care they need while child welfare staff can do the necessary paperwork and identify a good placement.

What a powerful mission! In a few weeks, George Benson and I will attend an Isaiah 117 'church connections' breakfast with other houses of worship in Lucas County to learn how we Trinity folks can be a support as this unfolds in our area. Come thirsty this Sunday. Let's draw the circle wide, friends!

Big love,

Heather Meyer

Director of Operations

PAT SQUIRE FUNERAL

Our ever-faithful Pat Squire passed away earlier this week at the tender age of 88. A service will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Trinity. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am in the sanctuary with the funeral service at 11:00 am. A reception will follow the service. Please keep Pat's family in your prayers.

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH DEVELOPMENT IN THE WINDY CITY

Hey y’all, it’s my turn to be gone the week of July 15. I am spending time with Canon Audra Abt in the Diocese of Chicago learning Year B of CCD, also known as having a great time learning how to be more effective at Trinity when it comes to working in our context of ministry. I will be here on Sunday, July 14 and July 21.

BABY, YOU'RE A FIREWORK!

Fourth of July on our Plaza was a rousing success. We lost count at 131 people who joined us. There were so many new faces and none of it would've been possible without the great party planning of Ariel Grube, Allen Santiago, Brian Ingham, Chelsie Cree and Grace Mauk. A special thanks to them and our Parish Life Team for helping us utilize this revitalized space.

PRIDE DONATIONS

Through August 18 we are asking for donations of 8oz water bottles and hard candy for Pride! You can drop them off at our “drop off station” by the columbarium. PLEASE, no chocolate as it tends to melt in the August sun. Any chocolate donated will be considered a tithe for our Director of Operations. If you have any questions please contact our Director of Community Engagement through email at, george@trinitytoledo.org

On the third Thursday of each month, Trinity supplies the vendors of Toledo Streets Newspaper (TSN) with a buffet lunch! And we need YOUR help! Trinity will purchase the food but we will need 4-6 volunteers to help prepare the meal deliver it to the TSN Office.

Join us on JULY 18th! Sign up here.

WORK NIGHT - JULY 15

As we know, Leadership Toledo is setting sail from their third floor offices mid July, off to their new space by Erie Street Market. We are joining forces with them and renting a roll off dumpster the week of July 15. How could this possibly impact you, my delightful reader? Well, you can sign up to help clean house of all the things we've been holding onto for decades because they didn't fit in our standard garbage cans. We can tell already you’re excited at this opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get bossed by the Director of Operations, Heather Meyer.  For some of you, it will be your first behind-the-scenes tour of our vast labyrinth of rooms in our basement, too!

Monday July 15 6-8pm. Come for as little or as long as you can. We promise to be fun and have something for all physical abilities! Sign up at https://sugeni.us/VXzA

WORSHIP AL FRESCO ON SUNDAY,  JULY 21

Weather permitting our 10:00 am worship service will take place on our Plaza on July 21. Team Trinity is busy at work behind-the-scenes to revitalize a tradition we've not been able to honor for years. Dress accordingly!

REVOLVING DOOR JULY

Trinity staff is here, there and everywhere during July!  We've come to appreciate there is no 'slow down' time here at Trinity and what a pretty amazing thing that is. Keep us in your prayers as we travel to and from wonderful training opportunities and times of respite and adventure. We will return (nearly!) fully charged and ready to hit the ground running with Toledo Pride.

HE GETS US...BUT WHO IS JESUS ANYWAY?

Since 2022, ads about Jesus have appeared on television and in other media. The ad campaign's tagline is a short three words – He Gets Us. The idea is to take a contemporary question or issue and to show how Jesus understands what people are dealing with – whether it’s saying goodbye, or family issues, or forgiving someone who hurt us. He gets us.
But who is Jesus anyway? Got questions? Got doubts? Not sure? Need a new introduction to a friend? Using Diana Butler Bass’s recent book, Freeing Jesus: Rediscovering Jesus as Friend, Teacher, Savior, Lord, Way, and Presence, as a resource, we’ll talk about finding Jesus on our own terms and in our own lives.

Sessions will be after church in the Walbridge Room on July 21 and 28, and August 11, 18, and 25. Jolene Miller and Amy Saylor will be facilitating conversation. Participants can come to whichever sessions they want to/are able to attend. Please sign up here if you plan to participate so we know how many books to order.  https://sugeni.us/VXj2

TRINITY PRAYER LIST

Did you know that Trinity has an active prayer list? If you’d like prayers for yourself or for someone you know, you can request them by contacting the Trinity office (trinity@trinitytoledo.org or 419-243-1231) or our interim rector, Stephen Applegate (in person or via email at stephen@trinitytoledo.org).

At the moment, all prayer requests are shared only with a small intercessory prayer group who, along with parish clergy, offer recurring prayers for each request. This is not a closed group. If you want to join Trinity parishioners who’ve committed to the practice of regularly praying for others, ask Stephen about joining the prayer team.

When a request is received, it remains on the prayer list for four weeks before it’s taken off. Requests can always be renewed or submitted again. However, having an “expiration date” will prevent the list from overflowing with prayer requests that are out of date.

BOOK CLUB

Book clubbers! We’re taking a bit of a hiatus for July and August but add this to the late summer reading list so it’s fresh in your mind for discussion on September 8. Stay tuned for sign up and zoom information. (*Our library has print, ebook and audio copies.)

TRINITY@HOME LIVE-STREAM

Trinity@Home is now a live-stream of Trinity’s 10:00 am in-person service with an interactive chat.
